Yes. They can be painted over.
Instructions are the same as finishing an unfinished beam located here:

Keys to success are load the brush with a very minimal amount of paint (dry brush) and paint with a water-baaed paint in thin layers. Once the color is on there it cannot be removed as sanding will damage the surface texture.
