Our mantels are 3 sided with 2 endcaps. The back is open and can fit over an existing mantel. To determine the size you'll need to factor the 1 inch material thickness. We recommend adding at least 2 inches to the height and 1 inch to the projection to determine the outside dimensions of the mantel.
