Is the 6 inch by 6inch opening in the split column caps an actual measurement or a nominal measurement?

The 6 inch by 6inch opening in the split column caps - is that an actual measurement or a nominal measurement; i.e., 6x6 or 5.5x5.5, please. Thank you!

Unfortunately I do not have the cap in front of me to measure but the opening is intended to accommodate a 6''x''6 structural post. The exterior dimensions are 10 3/8'' square.
